Warner Bros. Games Shuts Down Studios and Axes Wonder Woman Game Amid Major Restructuring
Warner Bros. Games has recently made significant changes, resulting in the shutdown of three of its studios while also canceling a highly anticipated game. Among the affected studios are Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego. Notably, the shutdown of Monolith signifies the end of the Wonder Woman game project, as confirmed by various sources.
Founded in 1994 and later purchased by Warner Bros. in 2004, Monolith Productions is renowned for its successful titles, particularly two games inspired by The The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Middle-earth Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Both titles received critical acclaim and captured the attention of gamers, largely due to their innovative Nemesis System, which even earned a patent. The Wonder The female-centric game was unveiled at The Game Awards in 2021, but subsequent updates have been scarce, leading to speculation about developmental challenges.
Player First Games is noted for creating MultiVersus, a free-to-play fighting game that draws inspiration from Super Smash Bros., featuring characters from DC Comics, Looney Tunes, and other Warner Bros. franchises. Unfortunately, this title is set to be delisted on May 30, 2025, just a year after its introduction to the market.
WB Games San Diego, which launched in 2019 and focused on mobile game development, is also among the studios being shut down. All three studios will cease operations, as reported by various industry insiders. This announcement comes just a day after key executives from DC Studios mentioned their conversations with developers from Warner Bros. Games about future video game projects based on DC properties. There are whispers of a new Batman Arkham game from Rocksteady being on the horizon, but sadly, plans for Wonder Woman have been halted despite an investment of approximately 100 million dollars.
