Unexpected Animation Woes Haunt Uzumaki's Second Episode
Horror anime enthusiasts experienced an unsettling surprise in the second episode of Uzumaki, marked by a significant dip in animation quality.
The internet was abuzz today with clips from the second of the four episodes of Uzumaki, adapted by Adult Swim from the renowned 1998 manga by horror legend Junji Ito. The story unfolds in Kurouzu-cho, a town gripped by a strange and terrifying curse connected to spirals.
Fans were left dismayed as the second episode appeared visually unrefined, showing that it might have still been in production months away from its final form. This stark contrast to the animation style seen in trailers and the widely praised first episode left many anime lovers feeling disappointed.
The premiere of Uzumaki was celebrated not only as a captivating adaptation of the original manga but also as an enjoyable experience on its own. It was noted that, while it may have reduced the grand vision of the source material, it served as a highlights reel of a cherished manga that met the high expectations of its audience.
The disappointing turn in quality is particularly frustrating for fans, as Ito, a celebrated figure in the horror manga genre, has seen his works adapted to anime before, but with very mixed results. His previous adaptations, namely the Junji Ito Gathering and Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Narratives of the Macabre, were not well received by viewers.
Additionally, Uzumaki's journey has been long, having been announced back in 2019. The series faced numerous development hurdles, which might explain the challenges evident in the second episode; it was initially scheduled for release in 2022.
