Instagram Empowers Users with Content Reset Feature to Tailor Feed Experience
Meta Platforms Inc. has initiated a change on Instagram, allowing users to reset their content recommendations and thereby giving them the chance to refresh the algorithm that influences the types of posts and videos they encounter in their feeds. This adjustment, currently in testing but expected to be implemented globally soon, aims to grant users greater control over their Instagram experience, particularly if they feel the content being displayed no longer aligns with their preferences.
Earlier this year, the platform introduced privacy features permitting younger users to select topics they wish to see more frequently, including categories like literature, travel, cuisine, and athletics. Instagram already offers a way for users to signal their interest in recommended videos and evaluates various factors, such as likes and shares, to curate their feeds. Resetting the recommendation system provides an opportunity for users to reassess the accounts they follow and decide if they want to unfollow any.
Meta has emphasized the importance of ensuring that every Instagram user, particularly younger audiences, enjoys a safe, positive, and age-appropriate environment while ensuring that their time on the platform has value. The company aims to empower teens with new methods to influence their Instagram encounters, allowing their feeds to authentically represent their evolving interests and passions. In recent times, Meta has focused on promoting content related to entertainment on Instagram, shifting away from news and political topics to encourage increased engagement from younger users and to reduce exposure to divisive posts.
The platform has also prioritized suggesting content from unfamiliar creators as part of its strategy to compete with TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance Ltd. TikTok’s algorithm, recognized for its role in the app's rapid popularity, excels in helping content creators reach a broader audience, even those who do not follow them. TikTok boasts over one billion users globally, many of whom are teenagers dedicating numerous hours daily to video consumption.
Last year, TikTok rolled out the option for users to reset their video feeds alongside enhancements aimed at limiting exposure for teens to potentially harmful content, including themes related to sadness, extreme dieting, or sexually suggestive materials.
