Double Fine Contemplates the Future of Psychonauts Amidst Celebrated Sequel Success
Double Fine hasn't closed the door on creating a third Psychonauts game just yet. Although Psychonauts 2 has been widely celebrated and remains a standout among contemporary platformers, the journey to its completion was notably arduous for the development team. This challenging process has been well-documented thanks to the 33-part PsychoOdyssey documentary, which covered the game's production in detail. Recently, an unexpected epilogue episode aired just before the weekend, offering glimpses of Double Fine's current projects.
During this episode, senior VFX artist Tazio Coolidge expressed his willingness to revisit the Psychonauts series, mentioning the valuable lessons learned from past experiences. However, he also acknowledged the significant difficulty involved. Another developer hinted that a third installment might be possible someday, though this sentiment was met with a simple and somewhat ambiguous response from a team member.
It appears that Double Fine holds diverse opinions on the future of the Psychonauts series. Given the lengthy 16-year gap between the first and second games, it may be reasonable for the studio to pause and potentially return to the platformer after a few years of hiatus.
