4 problems with pipes that can occur at home

Problems with pipes can cause a lot of headaches. This article covers the most common ones.

This article discusses the most common pipe problems that can occur at home. In fact, because the pipes are not in sight, many times you do not pay the proper attention, so you tend to detect the problem only when it reaches a certain magnitude.

Instead, the care and maintenance of the pipes are very important. Even if you pay a lot of attention to it, you have to take into account that over time the pipes will fail. This will happen more quickly if you do not take care to correct some bad habits.

When restoring the pipes, consideration should be given to repairing or changing them, especially if the house is already quite old. In addition, it is very important to take piping into account if you want to renovate your bathroom or kitchen: it is not always possible to make all the desired changes. This article provides some information on the most common problems with pipes.

The most common problems with pipes

1. Unpleasant odours

This is a very frequent phenomenon, particularly in hot periods. It is usually caused by decomposing food residues. For this reason it is very important to remove food residues from the dishes well and throw them in the garbage, not in the sink.

The problem can also occur due to the decomposition of the materials that seal the pipe joints, so it is very important to renew them often. Avoiding unpleasant odours in the kitchen and bathroom is not difficult: just pay attention!

2. Obstructions

This is one of the most frequent problems with pipes. It usually occurs due to the accumulation of soap and detergent residues that dry and solidify forming a layer that grows little by little, preventing the passage and elimination of other residues. Likewise, do not pour oil or other products into the pipes that do not degrade easily.

To prevent the problem in the bathroom, place grills to protect the drains from showers and sinks, so that too much hair or dirt does not end up in the pipes, where it could form a traffic jam. As far as toilets are concerned, it is important to throw in only toilet paper and never wet or absorbent wipes.

3. Problems with water flow

In some cases, problems with pipes occur with very little water flow, usually due to pressure problems or pipe obstruction.

In the first case, it is usually sufficient to check the appropriate valves or open the tap a little more. In case of obstruction, however, you will need to use a product to remove it; it can be a homemade remedy, a detergent for the drain or a chemical product.

4. Dirty water

This is one of the easiest pipe problems to solve, as it is often simply caused by not having opened the tap for a while. That’s why it usually happens when you return from your holiday. Usually the water takes on a brown or reddish colour, sometimes it also contains small sediments or it is a bit cloudy.

For the most part, it is sufficient to leave the taps open for a few minutes for the water to return to its normal appearance. Otherwise, this is a clear sign of the need to change the pipes, especially if they are already several years old. This phenomenon is often observed when restoring old houses or apartments.

As you can see, these problems are not very difficult to solve. Usually it is enough to use a plunger or some kind of chemical or natural product; some good pipe cleaning products can also be made at home.

Nevertheless, to prevent these and other problems it is necessary to regularly maintain the pipes, for example by using a special pipe cleaning liquid from time to time. Moreover, a fundamental element of prevention is to avoid letting a large amount of residue get into the pipes, whether it be food, detergents, hair, wipes, etc.

Of course, it is also possible that the network of pipes has not been built well. This can be a little more difficult to identify and can cause major problems. For example, if the pipes make many bends, more residue will accumulate. In addition, it is important that the bends are 90º, as a lower angle hinders the passage of residues.
